Veteran From the Holt County Sentinel-August 25, 1921
"Word has come to Mr. and Mrs. Matt Story, of Craig, that the body of their son, George C., had arrived at Hoboken, N.J., from the fields of France, where he gave his all in defense of his country, October 6, 1918, in the St. Mihiel sector, near Thiaucourt, which was only a short distance from Metz.
He was a member of Company I, 356th Infantry, 89th Division. He left Oregon, April 27, 1918, in the contingent of 13 men; of that number two were killed and seven were wounded. While most of them were assigned to the same regiment, the were not all in the same company.
Story\\\'s company\\\'s position was in a deep ravine, and it was subjected to a heavy German bombardment of gas and high explosives, which practically annihilated the entire company. Only about a dozen men were left for duty the following morning this bombardment-all either killed, wounded or missing.
