Alvin Henry Helfers, 84, Bella Vista, Ark., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Northwest Medical Center of Benton County in Bentonville, Ark.
Mr. Helfers was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Craig, Mo., to Henry and Emma (Idecker) Helfers. He was raised and educated in the Craig area. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Waunita Taylor on Jan. 1, 1947, in Craig. The couple moved to Kansas City in 1951 and to Independence in 1952, where he was employed by General Motors. He retired in 1981 and moved to Bella Vista in 1982. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Bentonville.
His survivors include his wife of 57 years, Waunita Helfers; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Pam Helfers, Blue Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Neil Johnston, Westfield, N.J.; four grandchildren, Anne Zagotta, Clare Callahan, Clint Helfers and Carrie Helfers; and a great-granddaughter, Vivian Zagotta.
Services were Saturday at the church. Burial was in the Oddfellows Cemetery, Craig. Arrangements were by the Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Hour, Braille Workers, or Faith Lutheran Church, 1602 N.W. 12th St., Bentonville, Ark. 72712.
