Dorothy M. (Moore) VanGundy, 97, passed away on April 21, 2009 at Shepherd\\\\'s Residential in St. Joseph.
Born Dec.13, 1911 in St. Joseph, she was the daughter of Lula M. (Hamm) and Harry Moore.
From an early age, she was raised by her mother and step father, Lula M. and George W. King. She attended the old Ernst School and Lafayette School in St. Joseph. She lived in St. Joseph for many years, working at the Mueller Hot Houses, the National Biscuit Co., and The Chase Candy Co.
On June 25, 1942, she married Clemon O. VanGundy of Fairfax, Mo. Until his death on Feb. 17, 1978, they lived on the VanGundy home place, farming in the Milton Community, southwest of Fairfax.
In 1964, Mrs. VanGundy became news correspondent for the Fairfax Forum and The Atchison County Mail until 1991. She was secretary for the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery from 1980 until 1991. After her employment ended at The Fairfax Forum, she did babysitting in her home for 10 years.
She was a member of The First Church of God, Craig, Mo., The Milton Community Club and the Fairfax Hospital Auxiliary. She had been secretary and treasurer for The Milton Cemetery since 1949. She designed and had the new Milton Cemetery sign erected in 1995.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clemon O. VanGundy; her mother and step father, Lula M. and George W. King; her father and step mother, Harry and Estella Moore; sisters, Darlene White, Nina Floyd and Betty Lou (King) Cobb; brothers, John D. and Carl F. King; stepson, Dick M. VanGundy of Tarkio, Mo.; step daughter, Virginia Rhoades of Oakland, Calif.; two step great-grandsons; and one step great-great-grandson.
Survivors: sister, Georgia R. Callen, Amazonia, Mo.; brother, Clarence H. (Bob) King, St. Joseph; step daughters, Beulah Frances Millsap and Dorothy Jean Bradley of Rock Port, Mo.; step son, Billy G. VanGundy of Fairfax; step daughters-in-law,: Judy VanGundy, Tarkio, Mo.; and Nancy VanGundy, Fairfax, Mo.; step son-in-law, Ott Rhoades, Oakland, Calif.; sister-in-law, Jewel King, St. Joseph; 11 step-grandchildren; 35 step great-grandchildren; 29 step great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, April 24, Fairfax, Mo., United Methodist Church; burial, I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, Mo. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Open visitation begins after 4 p.m. on Thursday at School Funeral Home in Fairfax.
