Mrs. Josephine Pearl Jewett, 71, of St. Joseph, MO., formerly of Craig, Mo., died Sunday afternoon, May 6, in a St. Joseph hospital. She was the widow of Guy C. Jewett.
Josephine was the eldest daughter of Carl Louis Willi Backhaus, a German immigrant, and Lulu Mae King Backhaus, was born in Benton Township near Langdon, Atchison County, Sept. 15, 1907, and died in St. Joseph\\\'s Hospital, in St. Joseph at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 21 days.
As a small child she was baptized into the Lutheran church of Langdon. On sept. 15, 1946, she joined the Methodist church of Craig, and remained a faithful member until it closed at which time she joined the Craig church of the Nazarene, and remained a member until April 15, 1979, when she transferred her membership to the Northside Church of the Nazarene in St. Joseph.
She attended the rural schools near Rock Port, and graduated from the Rock Port High School with the class of 1927.
On Nov. 18, 1933, she was married in Maryville to Guy C. Jewett of Fairfax, by the Rev. Willard M. Wickizer. The first seen years of their married life was spent on a farm in the Bellevue Community northeast of Mound City, and in 1942, they moved to Craig where they resided more than 36 years. In July of 1978 Mrs. Jewett moved to St. Joseph to be near her children.
Eight children were born off the marriage, seven of whom survive: four sons; Louis Oliver Jewett, Barnard, Lloyd Wayne Jewett, Savannah, Guy LaVern Jewett and Harold N. Jewett, both of St. Joseph; three daughters: colleen fields, Lake Holbrook, Texas, Joan Hearn, Lavon, Texas, and Shirley Bailey Mineola, Texas; two sisters, Leona Slemp and Jessamine Green, both of Rock Port; 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lois Backhaus; a twin son, Floyd Gene Jewett on Feb. 24, 1955; and her husband on Dec. 24, 1972
Services were conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, in the Heaton-Bowman Smith
