Russell C. Carlton, 73, a lifelong resident of Craig, died Monday, July 21, in the Veterans Hospital, Leavenworth, Kan., where he had been a patient for a week. The son of Robert Simeon and Effie Davis Carlton, he was born in the Craig Community Dec. 30, 1905. He attended High School in Craig.

Mr. Carlton was a retired hardware merchant and had been in business more than 20 years. He was the agent for Farmer\\\'s Mutual Crop Insurance in this area, also for more than twenty years. He served as a heavy equipment operator in the Army Engineer Corps in World War II, serving as a Corporal in the Army Engineers attached to the Air Force. He was a member and Past Commander of the Story-Hardin Legion Post No. 164 in Craig.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Carlton of the home; one son, Robert Carlton, Kansas City, Kan., two brothers, Delbert and Delmon Carlton, both of Craig; and one grandson, Robert Simeon, several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, in the Craig Church of the Nazarene. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, near Craig, with full military rites conducted by the Story-Hardin Post. The Firing Squad commanded by Don Whetsel consisted of Francis Brandt, Lynn Thurnau, Paul Rother, Alfred Schmidt, David Schmidt, and Robert Rother. Color Guards were Ivan Ohlensehlen, Edwin, Wright, Melvin Livengood and Elbert Foley. Orville Rebel and Wayne Crouse were the Flag Folders. Seven Haer, Mound City, played taps.

Pallbearers were John Trauernicht, Kenneth Haer, Orville Byrd, Earl Voltmer, Ceaf Rogers and Glen Rother, all Legion Members.
