Roberta Mae Lizar was born February 3, 1919, to Robert and Lida (Marsh) Lizar on a farm east of Trimble, MO, which is now part of Smithville (MO) Lake. She passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at Tiffany Heights in Mound City.
Roberta married Frank Gates on December 22, 1938, and later moved to Craig, MO. The couple farmed for four years on land which is now Interstate 29 (I-29) just northwest of Craig.
In 1944, Frank and Roberta welcomed a son, Dennis. The family moved into the city of Craig and had a grocery and feed store.
In 1960 Roberta went to work at Community Hospital-Fairfax, MO (CH-F), for 25 years, retiring in 1985. She and Frank enjoyed retirement. They loved their family dearly and always felt they had three adopted families: Hershel and Mari Ferguson and girls, Terry and Iva Tubbs and family, and Dale and Barb Kunkle and family. They had many great times playing cards and sharing many meals together.
Sandra Robbins was a special friend of Roberta\'s from CH-F. Roberta made many friends when she was president of Craig Senior Citizens for several years. Frank and Roberta enjoyed Kristin and Mallory Ferguson and Tracy Tubbs coming to their house to play cards.
Roberta was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Pearl; her husband, Frank, whom she loved dearly; sisters, Eva Powell, Iva Zemmes and Mildred Cox; brother, Raymond Lizar; and stepsister, Juanita Stubbs. She is survived by son, Dennis, and his wife, Sharon; two grandsons, Jeff (Chrystal) of St, Joseph, MO, and Phillip (Edita) of Murrells Inlet, SC; two great-grandchildren, Josiah Gates (Chelsie) and Elora Gates; and great-great-grandson, Julian Iver.
Roberta was a member of the Craig Presbyterian Church throughout her life, and she served the church in many capacities. She had many friends and great neighbors that did so many nice things for her. Roberta and was known for her flowers, cream pies, cinnamon rolls, and fried chicken.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 4, on the Craig Presbyterian Church lawn. Interment followed at the IOOF Cemetery located east of Craig. Family members greeted friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and had coffee and cinnamon rolls. Memorial donations may be made to the Presbyterian Children\'s Home or the Mound City Senior Center (Nutrition Site). Arrangements were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax/Craig.
