Elizabeth Viola (Carter) Schnegelberger

MOUND CITY, Mo. — Elizabeth Viola (Carter) Schnegelberger was born to Duffy and Helen M. (Clelland) Carter on November 30, 1920, near Humphreys, Mo. Elizabeth attended Wholey Rural School and graduated from Humphreys High School in 1938. She then attended college and earned a music degree.

On August 7, 1949, Elizabeth married Leonard E. Schnegelberger at the First Methodist Church in Trenton, Mo. They lived in rural Nishnabotna, Mo., before moving to Craig, Mo. where they lived for 33 years. Elizabeth taught music for a short time in her home town of Humphreys and organized its first band. She then taught music and some business classes at Craig. Elizabeth was known as a very strict but very good music teacher.

After receiving her library science degree, she was employed at Maysville, Mo., as a librarian for kindergarten through high school.

Elizabeth retired after a total of 43 years as a teacher. After retiring, they moved to Mound City. They enjoyed many memorable RV trips with family and friends and spent many winters in Texas. In December of 2010, Elizabeth and Leonard moved to the Oregon Care Center in Oregon, Mo. In 2011, they moved to Tiffany Heights Care Center, Mound City.

Elizabeth loved to do genealogy and had written three family history books that are in many libraries including the Library of Congress and the Salt Lake City Family History Library. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Elizabeth passed away Friday, November 25, 2011, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, at the age of 90. Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John Franklin Carter and James Vinson Carter.

Survivors include her husband, of 62 years, Leonard; and sister-in-law, Doris Carter. She will be greatly missed by several generations of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2011, United Methodist Church, Mound City. Interment: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig. Visitation: 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, United Methodist Church, Mound City, prior to the funeral service.
Memorials: United Methodist Church, Mound City Nutrition Center, or Tiffany Care Center, Mound City.
