Louis Oliver Jewett, 67, formerly of Barnard, Mo., passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at a Savannah, Mo., nursing home where he had resided the past six years.
Oliver was born September 19, 1935, near Rock Port, Mo., to the late Guy c. and Josephine (Backhaus) Jewett.
His youth and early life was spent in Craig, Mo., where he attended the Craig R-III School, graduated from high school there in 1953. During his high school years he had been a paper carrier for the Kansas City Star and the St. Joseph News-Press.
In December of 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for four years, and was stationed at several bases in the United States, England, and the Azores.
After serving his country, he returned to Craig for a short time, later locating at St. Joseph, Mo., where he was employed by Mead Corporation for over 34 years.
he had attended the Craig Church of the Nazarene.
On June 21, 1963, he was united in marriage to iris Louise (Penny) Noland at the Craig Church of the Nazarene. They renewed their vows at the church on their 25th wedding anniversary.
After their marriage they made their home in St. Joseph for six years, and the past 34 years in Barnard.
He is survived by four children, Paul Jewett and his wife, Kerri of Barnard, Robin Kike of nearby Bolckow, Mo., Jennifer Jewett of Barnard, and Marsha Wilmes and her husband Ted, of nearby Maryville, Mo.
He is also survived by three sisters, Colleen Fields and Shirley Bailey of Mineola, Texas, and Joan Hearn of Tyler, Texas, as well as three brothers, Harold and guy Lavern Jewett of St. Joseph, and Wayne Jewett of Lexington, Kentucky.
Other survivors include seven grandchildren, Hunter Jewett, Loran and Justin Murph, Ashlie and Jacquelyn Wilmes, Shelby Jewett, and Wyatt Lyle, as well as two aunts, and numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Floyd Gene Jewett.
Funeral services were Monday, July 7, at 2 p.m. at the Breit-Hawkins funeral Home, Savannah, with a nephew, Rick Bradley, officiating. A granddaughter, Lorna Murphy, sant "Daddy\\\'s Hands," and Dennis and Terresa Showalter of Craig, sang "If You Could See Me Now.". Cremation followed the services.
Inurnment for Oliver Jewett will be held Saturday, July 19, at 10 a.m. at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, near Craig, Mo., with services conducted by a lifelong friend and former classmate, Abie Showalter of Craig.
The Craig Story-Hardin American Legion Post will conduct military rites.
